An arteriovenous (AV) fistula is a surgically created connection between an artery and a vein, designed to provide safe and long-lasting vascular access for hemodialysis. Compared with other forms of dialysis access, an AV fistula is generally associated with better long-term function and a lower risk of infection and thrombosis when it matures successfully. For this reason, it is widely regarded as the preferred vascular access option for patients who require long-term hemodialysis.
